Maker Faire Bay Area 2015

Benicia Makerspace was once again at the big Maker Faire Bay Area this year. Thanks to Nicci, Doug, Jim, Chris, Aiden, Trish and Frank who helped staff our booth over the 2.5 day event. If you weren’t able to attend, here are a few pictures to show you what you missed and get you in the spirit to help us out next year.

Our new space!

Say Hello to Benicia Makerspace

Update 05-01-2015: This is now our old space :)
We finally have a space of our own. Thanks to the generous offer of the Benicia Unified School District we have a small space that we can use for group projects, small meetings and lots of other activities. You can get a better view of the space on Google+ here. While this space is not suited for woodworking or metalworking we plan on adding some computers and some other small equipment like a 3D printer and a small CNC machine. There is also an opportunity to spruce up the dormant gardens in front of the building. Look for Open House nights on our meetup page to come and check it out. Also, join the mailing list to suggest how we should make use of our new home.

Water Desalinization and White House Makerfaire

We had a very interesting night at our last public workshop. Joseph Rizzi gave a very interesting presentation about improved methods for water desalinization. Mayor Patterson also joined us and answered questions about State water policy before briefing us on her trip to the Washington D.C. for the White House Makerfaire. In case you missed it, we will be having another Open Project Night on August 6th at 6pm at the Benicia Library.

Here is a recording of the Mayor’s talk.

Presentation to Benicia City Council and Proclamation

We had the opportunity to present to the Benicia City Council on May 27th to teach them what a makerspace is and why having one is important to this region. The presentation went very well and the Mayor followed up with some suggestions for moving forward. Then, on June 3rd we were invited to come back for a proclamation from the council recognizing our efforts. Things are really picking up steam for Benicia Makerspace! If you would like to view the video from the meetings you can click on the links below. The video takes a minute or so to get started.

Arduino Electronics Workshop: Intro to Arduino

Monday 6/2/14 @ 6pm in the Benicia Community Center
Please RSVP on Meetup so we can make sure we have enough room and materials for everyone …

This Arduino workshop will give you the opportunity to get some hands on experience with the popular Arduino microcontroller platform. We will have kits for people to borrow for the workshop, but you can also buy your own complete kit from Adafruit or get a simple kit and arduino knock off from Amazon.  If you already have an Arduino bring it with you and we will bring extra components to use. Get ready to wire up some components and make things happen with this powerful yet accessible platform. Arduino “sketch” (program code) will be preloaded on our Arduinos so you do not need to bring a laptop, but you may bring one if you want to play with the code. We will be wiring up LEDs, variable resistors, and mini servos. No experience needed!

Here is the presentation from the event.

First Physical Tool Donation

We received our first physical tool donation at MakerFaire 2014 from GR Makers and Tekton Tools. We have other pledges to donate tools when we get our physical space, but this one came without strings and in a lovely laser cut wooden toolbox. The donation included many of the basics we would have had to buy ourselves including a hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, a multitool, box cutter, and even a set of helping hands for soldering. We anticipate that these tools will get many years of use after our space opens up.

Gardening Workshop: Sub-irrigated Planters

Monday 4/7/14 @ 6pm in the Benicia Community Center
Please RSVP so we can make sure we have enough room and materials for everyone …

This Gardening Workshop will focus on ways you can prepare for the upcoming growing season. You will learn how to run your own community garden and about sub-irrigated planters and how these things can help us deal with the current drought. Everyone will have the opportunity to build their own sub-irrigated planter to take home with them. If you would like to participate in the project please bring an empty 2-liter soda bottle with you. There is no cost for this project and it’s great for kids as long as they are old enough to sit through the talks as well, or feel free to drop in around 7:00pm to participate in just the project.

Electronics Workshop: 3D Printing

Monday 3/3/14 @ 6pm in the Benicia Community Center
This Electronics Workshop will focus on 3D printing. We will have two hobbyist 3D printers on display and will talk about how to get started using them. We may even have enough time to do a few prints so you can see how they work. We will also have some representatives from local 3D printing business to tell how their professional shops differ from a hobbyist approach and to answer questions.
